Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has explained that the whole team working with the defence has brought about a change in fortunes for the Magpies over the past few weeks.
Newcastle made a terrible start to their Championship campaign with two consecutive defeats but the Magpies have managed to spark a turnaround in spectacular fashion in recent matches, going on a five game winning streak.
The 2-0 victory over Derby County during the weekend has now lifted Newcastle to second place in the Championship table and things are looking very rosy for the Tyneside based outfit at the moment.
Manager Rafael Benitez has now spoken regarding his side’s brilliant run of form and has explained that the entire team’s desire to help out in defence has been crucial for the Magpies’ turnaround over the past few weeks.
The Spaniard explained to the Chronicle, “Because the team is working in defence. It’s not just the keepers, the defenders – but the midfielders, the strikers, everybody knows their role and they try to do that.
“Even in the last 15 minutes when Derby were pushing and throwing a lot of balls into the box, Ayoze [Perez] came in, [Jonjo] Shelvey was going to press, [DeAndre] Yedlin was doing well. So we knew what we had to do and everybody is trying very hard in defence and in attack.”
