Benitez hopeful that this player will not miss the next three matches

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has expressed his hope that he will not be without the services of Vurnon Anita.

Newcastle United’s wonderful six match winning run came to an unceremonious halt after they suffered an extremely disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers during the weekend.

To further sour the day for the Magpies, Vurnon Anita was shown a direct red card by referee Tim Robinson for his lunge on Ivan Cavaleiro and the Dutchman looks set to be unavailable for Newcastle for the next three matches as a result.

Now Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has gone on to have his say regarding Anita’s sending off and has expressed his surprise at the decision.

Benitez explained his belief that Anita’s challenge was not even a foul and added that Newcastle may look to appeal against the red card in a bid to overturn the defender’s impending three match suspension.

He told the Shields Gazette, “It was not even a foul. It was a surprise. I don’t know if we can appeal it, because I think everybody can see. The journalists who have watched it on the TV were surprised. Hopefully, we won’t lose him for three games. We will see.”
