Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has hinted that Karl Darlow could well start in goal for the clash against Norwich City on Wednesday night.
Matz Sels arrived at Newcastle United from Gent during the summer for a £6 million and given the sizeable outlay, a lot was expected from the Belgian international at St. James’ Park.
While Sels has put in a couple of decent performances so far, he has also made a number of high profile gaffes and the horror show against Aston Villa last weekend has led to the goalkeeper being subjected to a lot of criticism.
The criticism from the fans has been so fierce that Sels has been forced to close down his social media accounts and it is clear to see that the 24-year-old is under a lot of pressure at the moment.
Manager Rafael Benitez has backed Sels following the backlash from the fans but ahead of the game against Norwich, the Newcastle boss has dropped a huge hint that he could well replace the under fire Belgian and start with Karl Darlow.
Benitez was quoted saying by the Chronicle, “The goalkeepers are doing well. Karl has been doing well in the cup games, so I will decide tomorrow. I have told them both they have to put me under pressure, that is what I like.”
