Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez believes that the dramatic win over promotion rivals Norwich City could prove to be a springboard to future success this season.
Newcastle United headed into the blockbuster encounter against Norwich City on Wednesday night in a bit of a slump and the Magpies were under pressure to claim a good result during the clash.
At 3-1 down during one point of the game, it looked like Newcastle would have to suffer another disappointing result but a stunning comeback meant that the Magpies were able to claim a dramatic 4-3 victory, with Dwight Gayle finding the winner in the 97th minute.
The Newcastle United fans were understandably left elated at the manner of the victory and the usually calm Rafael Benitez also looked delighted with the result at the end.
Following the game, Benitez was in very optimistic mood and stated that the three points against Norwich could prove to be a springboard to further success in the Championship during the current campaign.
The Spaniard was quoted saying by the Shields Gazette, “You never know how important this could be. It is still early, but if you win and you win in this way, it is a boost for everyone.
“You have to give credit for the players because their work rate and spirit – everything you are looking for – you could see today. You could see all of those things.
“If we had drawn, fine. But if you win, it is even better. These kind of results are good for the team spirit. They are good for the players and the staff, but especially for the fans.
“It’s important to show that the team is there and together. If everything is fine, it is easy. But if something is wrong, we have to stick together. That will be really important for us for the future.”
