Newcastle United vs Blackburn Rovers – Pre-match and Predicted Line-up

Newcastle United go into this match needing a win to set a new club record of ten successive victories.
Many will feel that Rafa Benitez’s side are capable of doing so, especially with Blackburn struggling.
However, quite often when sides are struggling they will sit deep with players behind the ball.
This could potentially negate the influence of Newcastle star Jonjo Shelvey, who may not be able to find the space to play his killer passes into.
If this is the plan, then Newcastle fans may just see the best of Mo Diame, if he is selected.
Diame has divided opinion since his arrival on Tyneside, but his top-level experience and quick feet could be the key to unlocking a tight defence.
This could also be a game in which Rafa Benitez needs to change things. Dwight Gayle may find it hard to make his darting runs if there is limited space. Which could mean that the introduction of Aleksandar Mitrovic could be crucial.
Furthermore, do not be surprised to see Newcastle playing a slow, patient game in the first half to see if they can draw Blackburn out.
With all of this in mind, here is my preferred line up:
GK: Darlow
RB: Anita
RCB: Lascelles
LCB: Clark
LB: Dummett
CM: Hayden
CM: Shelvey
RW: Ritchie
CAM: Diame
LW: Gouffran
ST: Mitrovic
However, no doubt Rafa will have a better plan in mind. In Rafa we trust!

  1. Cheers Jake, won’t even try to second guess Rafa’s team selection, however I don’t see Mitro starting today and I’m still not convinced by Diame yet.

  2. I’d like to see us pumping volume into their box and giving them a seen test. Ritchie and Yedlin down the right with Atsu on the left and both Mitro and Gayle up front with Hayden and Shelvey in the middle. Can’t see it happening and I think Jake has called it right in that Rafa will take the patient route and pick them apart. Would just like to see us show that we can mix it up a bit and go the traditional fast paced route from time to time. Especially at home. Can’t have everything though!

You got it right, almost 😛

  4. Well big changes at the back and Gayle/Gouffran rested. That makes me confident that Rafa is targeting the League Cup and rightly so. The 10-in-a-row would be nice also and no reason why we can’t get it with Blackburn mainly free transfers. League cup is a chance to win something. The draws have been kind to us and if we get to a semi-final or final, they are like derby games IMO, where form and class go out of the window and it is like a 50% for both teams to nick it. Bring it on, positive thoughts. Anything is possible with Rafa, one game at a time.

  6. I’m not a fan of this squad rotation business mind – one or two maybe but he’s made 3 in defence as it is.
They’ve just had a fortnight off for the international break so if can’t be fatigue.
I understand it’s a long season and he wants to maximise the squad, but today is a loss of momentum I think.

  7. To be fair, Sharpy, it has served us well this season so far and it is very clear that Rafa is wanting to play what he thinks is his strongest side for the cup QF. You could argue that his rotation throughout the season has led us to be in this position of strength with allows him to rotate before a big game.

    In Rafa we trust!

  8. Wants to be fresh for the cup game on Tuesday, I guess.

I read something on the guardian the other day about how Rafa has always rotated squads. I guess it’s in his blood.

  13. Aye, I thought it may be too good to be true, to win 10 in-a-row for Mick Lowes final game. Those records are there for a reason. M’Bemba in for Lascelled was probably one change too many.
Swansea 5- Crystal Palace 4. That could be the end for Pards.

  14. Poor old Mick Lowes–but he or Ando said words to the effect that it wouldn’t be Newcastle if we didn’t mess up these kind of of opportunities, so it’s kind of exactly the right ending for him!

I don’t, with the cash and freedom to buy the players he wanted and good players too, they shouldn’t be in their position.
I see Townsend was benched again too.

Awful, bloody awful. We used to defend leads…sorry Al, time to go.

This side on paper should not be in the trouble it is.

I preferred it when we had 5% possession, played with 11 men behind the ball and hit teams on the break.

We need an overhaul of the coaching staff as well as the manger, unless Pardew is actively restricting defensive and fitness training you have to wonder how we’ve become so poor.

I’ve not been in the ‘Pards-Out’ camp but i think his time is finally up. Hiddink please (in my dreams).
Would he be the first manager to be sacked after his team scored 4?

    Soon.

I have just seen AP post match interview that guy needs to go using the excuse all the goals set play and changes need to be made who we don’t have any other people to change to and he is the one keep picking people like Kelly.

Palace wont fire him and he wont walk so we are going to just have to put up with him

If it was another team we’d agree the owners were wise to change manager. It’s clearly time now for A.P to go. A new manager could rebuild team-spirit and organisation don’t you think? With a half-decent manager this team would be mid-table, not throwing away leads to Swansea.

Pardew has proved beyond any doubt that he’s just incapable of setting up a team to close out a game and I’m fed up with seeing decent players shipping stupid goal after stupid goal after stupid goal and having their confidence and energy sapped to the point where they don’t know where the tunnel is at the end of the game.

What he’s turned us into is a disgrace and anyone who thinks it’s magically going to stop is delusional.

I agree. If Pardew had to go, Millen & co have to go with him. A complete culture change, top to bottom, is necessary.

With Wickham prone to injury it was a mistake (and pound foolish) to let Gayle and Murray go. Even we have Messi he won’t score many goals due to Pardew’s tactics and style of play. Both Gayle and Murray were quite jelled into the team but many here would disagree.

an entertaining game for the neutrals (& swans fans, brighton, clowns, toon, wall etc.)

    must go tonight.
    Surely?

    Oh yes mate 😆

  21. Let’s face it we were pants today. No urgency. No closing down. Give Gouffran another year but no way should we sign Atsu. Yedlin is too negative. Passes back too much and when he does go forward has to stop before he decides what to do. Bring back Anita please. I know Mitrovic has a lot of supporters on here and I know he is young but I think he is a plank and I wouldn’t be sorry to see him go. Rant over. I am so upset with today’s performance. Darlow had a good game fortunately and after a rusty start Mbemba did a good sweeper’s job. Shelvey tried hard but everyone else including Ritchie unfortunately had an off day.

      (Quote)

  22. Well I know we are still in the driving seat, and I’m sure we will still go up – but I can’t lie, I’m ****** off about today like.
I know we have a cup game coming up but the priority and focus should always be the game you are playing.

Keeping players fresh is one thing but there were too many changes today, and I think keeping a winning mentality is equally as important as resting players – particularly as today was only the 2nd competitive game in the last 4 weeks.

  23. It would be a shame if Pardew isn’t given time to turn things round. He’s proved at the toon that if given time he did just that.

  25. Troy is right, Pardew will turn it round. He just needs to be given time, no sense in making knee-**** decisions…

Well, I didn’t see that toon result coming today. No way. Disappointing. What a brilliant opportunity to break a year long record and we blew it.

I’m lost why you think different. He was in this position with toon and pulled it round several times.
Surely the great Slaven Bilic should be sacked as well?
They were raving about him last season. Give these managers more time. Palace are one game from mid table.
He’s not great. But he’s not bad. Palace are not big spenders.

      (Quote)

  27. Troy, they have some quality players there, they should not be struggling imo. As you say he’s not great. I do hope they don’t sack him though, it’s much more fun watching him squirm . 😉

  30. I agree. Too many changes. The defense is like the buildings foundation. Mess with it and everything comes toppling down.

    Sack Rafa.

? I doubt he will make that mistake again any time soon. A few players will be waiting a long time to get their chance again.. I too am not sold on Atsu. We need more quality options out wide. Come back Townsend, all is forgiven.

  31. Well I missed the match yesterday as I was at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Qualifying. Gutted when I got the result, it spoiled my whole day. How can we lose at home to Blackburn? We always seem to kick ourselves in the nuts whenever we have an opportunity to achieve something. A chance to go top, a chance to get out the bottom 3, a chance to break a record… we always self destruct. Well that’s the Toon I guess.

Heading back to Abu Dhabi today for the race but just feel so deflated. A Toon win or loss can make or break my week no matter what else is going on…

  32. I know we have the hull game coming up, but Rafa tinkered a little bit too much yesterday.

Having said that, we were due a loss at some point – just didn’t expect to be at home against one of the worst sides in the division.

i think thats why Rafa made so many changes as Blackburn are a poor side he thought certain players could step up to the mark now he knows some just cannot not as agroup anyway, a few of them might just be leaving come the end of season it might also mean Rafa might just bring some in come Jan

      (Quote)

  34. Ain’t it funny how we were just happy to be in the playoffs then to be in the top 2, behind Huddersfield, or Norwich ❗ It’s amazing what a run of nine wins can do for expectations isn’t it. 🙂 (I knew this would happen)

      (Quote)

  35. Not just because Atsu was poor yesterday, but I think we missed the mobility of Gouffran along the front line. This season he has been very mobile along the edges of the box taking defenders with him. As someone said after yesterday game we always won when Gouffran played. Coincidence? If Gayle is ever out then given Mitro’ s performance yesterday I would go with Gouffran up front. I am sure also that Callum Roberts could do a better job than Atsu.
But that wouldn’t be difficult. Good to see that Rafa also thought the performance of the players was poor. By the way Blackburn would never have scored if the ref had not given them a corner ithey clearly shouldn’t have had, which led to subsequent corners from which they scored. However we have to live with the result and I am sure Rafa will sort things out.

      (Quote)

  36. Rafa might now stop the tinkering with the squad.
If I was still a season ticket holder I would certainly want the best players available to be playing, especially at home.
That’s three home games lost already this season.
Re Callum Roberts, wasn’t he injured recently, knee ligaments? and out for the season , or more likely 12 months with that type of injury.

      (Quote)

  37. Roberts played for the U23s recently – not season over.

Re yesterday – too many changes Rafa. It wasn’t poor players brought in but no team shape. That defence had never played together before. Having said that there were poor performances all over the park. Hayden, Atsu, Perez and even Ritchie were well below par.

      (Quote)

  38. Sidekick. Didn’t know that about Roberts. He did come back recently after injury but perhaps he was injured again on his return. If I remember now he was stretchered off in his last game. Certainly he has not appeared in the last Under 21 s match. NUFC. COM doesn’t keep up to date now on the reserve squad injuries. Thanks for the info.
