Burton Albion vs Newcastle United – Pre Match and Predicted Team

Newcastle travel to Burton today in what, on paper, looks like a game that they should win.

However, there has been much talk, during the week, regarding the tactical threat that Burton Albion could pose to Rafa Benitez’s side.

Burton play with wing-backs, which, in theory, should allow them to make the pitch big and retain possession of the ball.

However, with Burton struggling in the league and Newcastle flying at the top, it could work in reverse for the home side.

While playing with wingbacks does allow a side to play wide and retain the ball, it also means, by virtue of making the pitch big, that they are less compact and that there could be more space to exploit.

Mo Diame has been arguably Newcastle’s best player in recent weeks and his influence could be needed again, to make use of the extra space if he is selected.

As always with Rafa, who named an unchanged side for the first time this season against Wigan during the week, there is no guarantees that anyone will start.

So here is what we feel that the team should be:

GK- Karl Darlow

RB- Vurnon Anita

CB- Jamaal Lascelles (c)

CB- Ciaran Clark

LB- Paul Dummett

CM- Jonjo Shelvey

CM- Isaac Hayden

RW- Christian Atsu

Ten- Mo Diame

LW- Yoan Gouffran

ST- Dwight Gayle

However, as always, this just opinion. What do you guys make of this side? Would yours be different?

  1. Probably only half a dozen players in our top 20 who would do anything to be a Newcastle player ……..Mitro is one of them ……we sure as hell aren’t going to lose because he starts ….deserves a start ……AND ….yes I know Gayle is best striker in the Championship

  2. Cheers Jake. Just read this morning that Gayle has scored more goals than Ronaldo and Messi in 2016. In the championship yes, but la Liga is essentially the championship from 10th down.

In which case Gayle should be up for the Ballon D’or ?.
Come on mate!!. Gayle has done brilliant, but Messi & Ronaldo?!.

  4. These are the teams we should be beating, will be very disappointed if we don’t .
    Cheers Jake.

  5. Burton away could encourage a bit of squad rotation and use some of the players who haven’t had much game time yet – Lazaar, Mbemba, Hanley, Murphy – maybe even Sels.
But I wouldn’t be keen on too many changes, coz look at what happen at Bburn. We have to come away with the 3 points first.
Huddersfield winning last night showed there is no let up at the moment. Make a few changes maybe but 2 or 3 tops for me, then use subs.

  7. Be a tough old game this. I have a funny feeling it will be tricky as when we got relegated this was the fixture everyone mentioned when taking the piss.

Ice – no disrespect to Murphy, but I do think that was a wasted £5m. I really don’t see him playing many (if any) games for us at all.

Stu – you’d expect Burton to defend deep and keep the goal difference down. But we would be a big scalp for them & they will have looked at the Bburn game I bet for ideas of how to shut us out. Treat it as a bit of a cup game.
Yeah, I don’t think today will be straightforward at all.

  10. Moyes saying he’d have turned Sunderland down if he knew they were skint ?.
That would also suggest though that they could well loose the likes of Pickford & Kone in Jan.
Maybe there really are worse owners than Ashley ?

Moyes is a fool mate, it’s been common knowledge they are in debt for seasons now, why would he not get that in writing in his contract about funds for players? What is it they say about fools rushing in. Poor sods on a hiding to nothing there.

  12. If anyone has links for radio commentary that would be great, Pepe has gone off air last few games and I struggle to find a working one.

  13. I watched Keys and Gray yesterday and they had a Fat Toad of Toad Hall on there. They were fawning all over him as he spouted the line that he was hard done by to be sacked by England and if only he was given the reins of a big club like Man U he would rule the world. A couple of sycophantic sexist ****s sucking up to a wank cheat. It was unwatchable and I had to turn it off.

  15. Don’t have a link so I will go with this. Does this look familiar Troy? Palace in 2016:

    LLLLLDLLDLLDWLLWL
    LLDWWWDLLLLLLWDLL

    That is not average!!!!

  16. I wouldn’t mind Schteve going up. I had nothing against him as long as he wasn’t OUR manager. He seems like a decent bloke really.

  17. Why has Irving not got a second yellow for that foul ? He’s just been carded for a pull on Yedlin then goes and commits a second foul seconds later!

  18. I have an issue with this team repeatedly letting teams back in so quickly after taking the lead. Why is it so difficult to hold their shape after scoring?

  19. Eric Sykes:
    My guess for relagation:

    Mackems, Hull, Boro.

Palace will sack Pardew just in time to sav a good squad.

It is a good squad too Eric, that’s why his results are so damning. He bought Andros on very late on in the hope he’d save his skin, just like he used to do with Benny with us.

  20. Also think Zaha is growing increasingly frustrated with his role, as they said in commentary he is doing an awful lot of defending in games when he should be further forward. This is all so familiar isn’t it.

  21. Fantasy football was playing up yesterday and would not let me sub players. Negredo is sat on the bench as a result… Slightly frustrating. At least Allen is in my team.

  22. Sham: we still win most of the time though. Rafa goes on amazing winning runs, he does it with all his teams. Even when Liverpool finished 2nd to Man U they won like 11 of their last 13 and if it wasn’t for Lord Vadar would have got the league…

  23. Back to us anyway, it sounded like a real slog at times that first half, credit to the lads for keeping plugging away, lets hope we can keep hold of the points second half. Boy are we gonna miss Jonjo if he gets banned, he makes us tick and is the main supply line.

Burton had control in the first half hope Rafa has words at half time

They were struggling with Gayles movement though Ice but yeah they are a physical lot alright.

  25. I watched Burton earlier in the year and they looked like a decent team. It was a surprise as I thought they were non league only a few years ago and played in a cow shed.

  26. Be really interesting to see how the Brighton match goes later what with Brum sacking Rowett and Zola taking over. If we win the pressure is back on Hoots boys on top of facing a newly managed Brum.
