As reported by the Chronicle, Rafa Benitez has given an update on the fitness of his star striker.
Dwight Gayle was taken off in yesterdays win over Brentford, after opening the scoring, and when he was asked if he could give an update on Gayle’s injury, Benitez said: “Not too much. With the three of them we’ll have to wait, the doctor told me we will have to check tomorrow. Obviously to make substitutions is not good news.
“But in the end we had to do it.
However, the substitutions did lead to Daryl Murphy scoring the winning goal, and Benitez added: “I am really pleased with the players coming off the bench. They needed to perform in a difficult game.
“The fans can be very proud of their team because they worked so hard.”
After weeks of negativity the win should give Newcastle fans a reason to be positive, although they should hope that the loss of Gayle does not have as big of an impact as the loss of Shelvey.
