Nothing Less Than A Win Will Do – But Returning Stars Should Stop Any Shocks

Newcastle host QPR tonight and it is probably fair to say that, after defeat to Oxford at the weekend, and a failure to make a transfer during the whole of the January window, anything less than a comfortable home win could well be a huge cause for concern.

However, Newcastle netted six last time the teams met, in the reverse fixture at Loftus Road and Daryl Murphy, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie, and a few others should be back in the team tonight.

The bench should look a lot stronger too, with Mo Diame and Chancel Mbemba back from the African Cup of Nations.

So, while nothing less than a win will do, any other result at this stage, looks highly unlikely.

With most of the absentees from the weekend set to be recalled, what could the team be tonight?

After a terrible performance at the weekend, I think that everyone would like to see wholesale changes. Personally, I would like to see the team look like this:

GK: Karl Darlow

RB: DeAndre Yedlin

RCB: Jamaal Lascelles (c)

LCB: Ciaran Clark

LB: Paul Dummett

CM: Chancel Mbemba

CM: Jonjo Shelvey

RW: Matt Ritchie

CAM: Mo Diame

LW: Yoan Gouffran

ST: Daryl Murphy

  1. Troysta: what are you doing back on? Come to explain why everything you have ever said about football, and especially Pardew, was wrong? Well, go ahead, tick tock. I am waiting 🙂

I will say again what I said when you were gloating about Chunky starting out well at Palace. I said “just wait” and so did Mark and Kimtoon. He has a pattern that you never saw but everybody else did. So, tick tock. Admit you were wrong.

  2. Yep, Win badly needed to lift spirits as well as widen that gap. Brighton have the bit between the teeth and eager to make up for last seasons disappointment so don’t expect them to slip up and Reading have strengthened now as they look to close the gap. We can’t be mucking about here, have to get stuck in and get a result tonight.

Jake I have posted new thread up on previous one, can you please remember to put a link up to new threads otherwise folk who just return to their already opened tab just carry on posting on it without realising a new link is up. Cheers.

  3. We will see if Rafa throws in the lads just back from ACON? I would be shocked if MBemba starts in midfield as we have Hayden and Colback and MBemba has never played there for us. And I will be surprised if Diame is in ahead of Perez. You never know though.

please no Colback guys rubbish,by the way i also made many comments on Pardew even while he took us to 5th i knew byhis track record he was a nightmare waiting to happen it he will contine where ever he goes

  6. The season we finished 5th was good but a lot of that was luck. The following season Ashley didn’t add to the squad even thou he had the AC money sitting in the bank. We could and should of at least offered Ba a improved contract instead of trying to spend 10-15 million on a new player which we didn’t anyway. This January was no different.

  7. Oh sorry, we had a busy January instead because we stood a good chance of going down. Remy didn’t turn up for the meeting and joined QPR instead. I thought Ba was the better striker myself.

  9. Not impressed Clark is still on.

UK sport is so far behind in concussion research, it is dangerous. He should have been immediately substituted.

Look up Chris Benoit and NFL player stories for what can happen with repeatedly being concussed and it being ignored.

  11. shelveys goal apart – we’ve been ****.. stop – start play. 3 passes at the most….

as soon as we got an early goal I knew it was going to a long half 🙄

  12. Well hello people, been out tonight and just got in to watch that ****. Hope we play better in the second half… I missed Shelvey’s goal but from what did see we have been rubbish and equaliser was coming …

Well let’s see what the second half brings bug this seems a different QPR than the team we thrashed at their place

  13. Not exactly a dominant first half at home. Our play over the last month hasn’t been that good. Too late to talk about the window. I would make early changes if the second half doesn’t start with us playing better.

  14. gouffron and perez both pathetic. ritchie and deyedlin both huffing and puffing and creating nothing.
    all in all, absolutely garbage.
as Icedog pointed out yonks ago, playoffs at best. This team has peaked already, we have nothing left to offer.
    **** players and **** tactics

  16. We have made heavy work of this tonight. Let’s hope we can hang on… I don’t like it when only a single goal ahead.

  17. Can we play Mbemba now please? Draw against QPR at home, what a joke. Thank god Leeds lost the other day, them and Reading our right on our tails now.

  18. Very very unhappy with that tonight… hope we sign someone to strengthen the team …. ??? oh wait, we didn’t and the window is closed…

  19. strange substitutions from Rafa.
lascelles, dummet and clark all feeling the strain, none of them looked comfortable on the ball. shelvey anonymous again.
very poor again today, we have been for months now.

  20. Squandered chance to go back into first place. I’m a bit worried now. No support from the owner. I wouldn’t like to hear what Rafa might have to say. We can’t just depend on Gayle, we needed another decent striker. Perez has been hopeless in all honesty. We look to be fading at the back as well.

  21. Didn’t take our chances tonight for me – and we had some good uns.
Their keeper MOTM and I’d agree with that – made some good saves to keep us out.

Our defence was too casual tonight and Lascelles is way too cocky for my liking – thinks he’s got all the time in the world to pass the ball out & gets caught out.
Shelvey should have closed that cross down for the second goal – but defo Darlow should have made the call to Clark to leave it for him.

Agree mate. Players in Midfield and defense are not in a good form today.

  23. Pundits pissed me off tonight though, over analysing Shelveys nothing kick out – yet the blatant stamp on Sammys back that the linesman conveniently didn’t see never got mentioned.

  24. Just a thought but would Armstrong be a good fill in for Gayles absence?
He seems to be that forward that plays on the shoulder of the defenders. Don’t know if he can be recalled or not. Nowt against Murphy, I really like his work ethic and no doubt he can score goals in this league.
Rafa has been moving Goof into the middle as a Gayle type forward – but I think Armstrong could and should be that back up.

  25. Now a point behind with a game more played. And with two poor performances in a row this is very ominous indeed.

Andy – he did it at Coventry & he’s doing it in the Championship with Barnsley mate. He’d have better more experienced players around him at NUFC though. I reckon he’d learn a lot from Gayles movements & runs in training sessions as well though.

    id agree with that m8
we have some average players to shift IF we get promoted
the full bench last night plus, Yedlin, Perez, Goof, Murphy, Diame

question marks over Hayden, Clark, dummett

“Yes I was disappointed we didn’t sign anybody and no – I don’t know what went wrong on Tuesday.”

hhhmm first signs of trouble at mill?

Maybe Rafa isnt trusted after buying Lazaar, Sels, Gomez, Murphy and Hanley, Yedlin

I’m glad Mbemba is still here. definitely needs to play more often
