As reported by the Chronicle, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has spoken out about why it is important that his team aim not only for promotion, but for the Championship title as well.
When asked about the race for promotion, Benitez said: “If you win the title it means you are there ( back in the Premier League). If you try to be first then you might be closer to being second.
“If you try to just be second, then maybe you’ll end up being close, and being third. We just have to try to be first.”
The Newcastle boss was also asked about the recent form of Brighton, who appear to be Newcastle’s main challengers for the league title, on Brighton, Benitez added: “Brighton have lost games, you saw last week. I still have confidence we can win the title, not just be promoted. If I don’t have this confidence it will be a problem.”
