Newcastle United 2-0 Aston Villa – How The Pantomime Villain Became The Toast Of Tyneside

Before the game, there seemed to be a feeling that last night’s game against Aston Villa was a must win, and that the game would be difficult.

If truth be told, both of those things were true. Villa were well organised, pressed high and had a great work ethic, everything that you would expect from a struggling team hoping to get a result against one of the top sides in their division.

However, despite this, the quality of the Newcastle players shone through and they were able to win by two goals to nil, playing some wonderful football in the second half of the game.

Another thing that everyone was sure of, going into the game,  was that Henri Lansbury would definitely not receive a warm welcome, and shockingly, he didn’t.

The former Nottingham Forest man was booed and jeered for almost the entire game, following a performance that would have been more suited to a pantomime than a football match, the last the that he played against Newcastle.

Actually, the only time that Lansbury was not booed was for a brief period following Newcastle’s second goal. The reason? He was the one who scored it. Lansbury’s own goal doubled Newcastle’s lead, following a first half strike from Yoan Gouffran, which was met by a brief chorus of “there’s only one Henri Lansbury.”

However, that was soon drowned out by a far less complementary song about the Villa midfielder.

In summary, Newcastle fans could not have wished for a better night. A comfortable win against a massive club, and the player who wanted so badly to be the villain of the piece sealing the win for them.

  1. I want us to start Murphy on Tuesday, we can always bring on Mitro if it isn’t working out. Brighton are so dominant in this game now.

  2. It’s hard playing with ten men and always will with bloody Colback in the team, strange how we played better when he went off the useless arsehole,go back to the scum please

  3. Well Brighton will go top again as expected really. They are playing really well. Could’ve been more than 3… we will have to do it the hard way and beat them on Tuesday. Only things going for us are that:
1 we play better away these days
2 we tend to play better against stronger teams.

Against us is… Colback, Perez, Mitro and a few others.

  4. Kim, I really hope Rafa will make you a very happy B-day next Tuesday! 😛

I just read Hughton said “It’s impossible to get all the results you want, to play at a level you want all the time. It’s about when that doesn’t happen can you still get results?” I can’t agree more.

We lost Gayle and Hayden, two very important players. But I think the main reason that we lost points were, as Rafa mentioned, lack of focus in the game.

We can get results on Tuesday. It will be depend on us – we can’t make stupid mistakes. Rafa has the reputation to do well when facing a strong team. Let’s wait and see, and hope.

  5. So a mixed day. Happy with a draw after being 2 nil down but disappointed we didn’t win as we had so many chances!

Huddersfield drawing helps us and Reading losing also helps us. Personally I think it’s 2 from 3 now. Our odds are pretty good.

  6. our odds are good, our form is not good.
However losing top spot could be a motivating factor.

  7. We are missing Gayle’s goals and dare I say Anita at right back too . The defence was well sloppy again today, our concentration level is poor at times .

  8. Kim – I agree. Our fullbacks were poor today. Yedlin at fault for the first – his man at the back post had way too much space and time for that header.
The 2nd looks like it’s Darlows fault for coming out. But his reaction suggests to me that he gave Dummett a shout and Dummett headed it anyway.

For me Lascelles needs to step up as a captain and organise that back 4 better than that.

City had way too many chances for an away side today. We were lucky to come away with anything today coz our goals were scrappy to say the least.

  9. defo points dropped yesterday
getting worried but our style and play is a little off at the minute.

hopefully after the next few games we’ll be top and not 3rd.

Without Gayle we look a struggling team, maybe not result wise but definitely performances. Gayle will take a few games to get into his stride. like I said, maybe im just overly concerned…

Brighton have looked solid all season, had a blip after we beat them and Huddersfield keep getting better. 😳

  11. Sharpy – To be honest I don’t think Yedlin was at fault. Yes it was the man nearest him but he played the offside trap along with everybody but Clark. You can’t be blamed when your man is free after everyone has played the offside trap. It was Clark who was at fault for playing him on side. For the second the fault must lie with Dummett. If in any doubt kick it out but he didn’t and we suffered for it.

Thought Atsu was good but his final ball was pretty woeful for most of the game but he certainly had the beating of the full back.

Have us down for a draw Tuesday, a win at Huddersfield and a victory at Reading.

  12. Gash – How are Huddersfield “just getting better”? They started the season very well, fell away, then went on a winning run and then drew at Barnsley which could possibly be the start of another up and down period, especially with their next game against us.

hmmm I thought i said “keep” getting better… 7 wins and 1 draw out of 8 suggests they keep getting better than ehhh previously losing a couple and drawing a few??

  14. Good thing about our game v Huddersfield is they play MCity in the cup on the Wed..although we need to see how we fair v Brighton on Tuesday.

  15. We won’t beat Brighton, draw would be a great result all things considered. Imo at the moment they look a more cohesive unit than us. We have too many key personal unavailable and they have been pretty lucky to not have lost key players like Knockaert, who if out injured would seriously effect their form. We badly need Gayle back and Anita and Hayden too.

  16. in the first 17 games we took 40 points
in the last 16 games we’ve taken 30 points
if we continue with the current ratio of pts well get around 24/25 pts from the rest of our games putting us on 94/95 pts

If we find similar form to the first 17games well reach 100 points 😆

The best thing for me is that we are away coz we seem woeful at SJP.

I think we have to start high tempo & be in their faces straight away. If we allow them to get into their stride then they will beat us for sure. I watched them last night and they are really well drilled.
They aren’t brilliant, but everyone knows their role and sticks to it with good discipline. They have a real talent in Knockeart and Murray is a good forward.

stu.. stop being an **** m8
theyve taken 37pts from their last 16 games so clearly getting better.. their fixtures before that were a mixture of losses and wins..

theyre certainly playing better and taking more points than us going off the last 16 games

  20. if Huddersfield continue with their form theyll end up on the same points as us (if we continue similar form)

I’m almost confident 😡 we’ll hold our nerve and start picking up points.. starting Tuesday

  21. Don’t know what’s going on with Darlow and the back four. We’ve now dropped 6 points with his rushes to the edge of his box and lack of communication with the defence. Twice their forwards have been able to walk the ball into an empty goal. Weird.

The real worry for me now is we’re not creating any clear chances. Our goals are all coming from scraps around the 6 yard box. It’s a real dip in form at precisely the wrong time. Not bothered by the Brighton game but we really need to win at Huddersfield.

Gabbiadini is a superb buy. tbh i had never heard of him before he joined Southampton.
No nonsense striker, looks a right skinny scruff but is a handful with bags of skill

The Chinese offer Rafa 30 mil/£6000.000 a wk,he might just take it if we don’t go up

Ice – I don’t think so mate. He stayed with us coz he wanted to stay in England to see more of his family. I’m not saying I think he’ll stay with us if we don’t go up, i just don’t see him going to China.
It’s huge money but Rafa is a football man and he’d place elite level football over money (IMO)

He’s goes to day centre mate he’s 26 but a lot of the service users like Lew have compromised immune systems so a simple cold and cough is a big deal. I don’t think I have ever known anything like this though, even healthy folk are struggling with it down here. They are calling it the 100 day cough !! horrendous stuff. Thick yellow mucus like I have never seen 🙁

I take two of these a day and a vitamin D supplement, seems to help.
