As reported by the Chronicle, Rafa Benitez has given an insight into Dwight Gayle’s injury, after the striker was taken off in the 2-0 win against Aston Villa last night.
Speaking after the game, Benitez said of Gayle’s injury: “I was disappointed because he was doing really well in the training sessions. Last week his partner had a baby and there were some nights when he was not sleeping well.”
“He didn’t train on some days. It’s difficult to say but when you put everything together he wasn’t comfortable at the beginning.”
“We had to make the substitution. Hopefully it will not be serious, but maybe he will miss some games.”
“It is more or less the same problem. We will see.”
Rafa also gave a fair assessment of the game, adding: “In the first half we did not play at the level we expect. You have to give credit to them.
“But as soon as we scored and then the second one, the game was more open and we had more control.
“We passed the ball better and we were more dangerous.”
