Newcastle face another top of the table clash this Saturday with a trip to South Yorkshire to face a Huddersfield side who are making an unlikely tilt for promotion to the Premier League.
Terriers head coach David Wagner is a passionate man and his spat with Leeds United manager Garry Monk last month is testament to that, however, that resulted in the German being handed a two-match touchline ban meaning he will be absent from the dugout for the Magpies visit on Saturday.
However, that hasn’t stopped him from warning Newcastle that they are coming to a fortress and face an atmosphere to rival any away day they have previously faced this season.
Wagner spoke after his side lost to Manchester City in the FA Cup and had this to say to reporters: –
“I have no question that the supporters will create an atmosphere that will be the best we have ever seen at the John Smith’s stadium and this is exactly what we need to play against a top of the table Newcastle United.”
Huddersfield have been defying the odds this season and sit third in the Championship just eight points behind Rafael Benítez’s side and pose a very real threat to the Magpies’ title charge.
Most football betting predictions will swing towards a Newcastle away win as they have had the extra day’s rest, despite Wagner making it clear that the John Smiths stadium will be an intimidating experience.
Current form suggests this will be a close game with Huddersfield unbeaten in their last seven league games, whilst Newcastle have gone nine games without suffering a loss. Expert tipsters like https://footballpredictions.com/ predict a 2-2 draw in this game between two evenly matched teams.
Newcastle are also heavily buoyed by their late win over title rivals Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday night and will be eager to end another potential challenger’s assault on their desired throne.
Goals have also been the Magpies’ forte whereas Huddersfield have been less prolific in putting the ball in the back of the net.
Newcastle have 22 more goals this season than their weekend rivals and that could be the deciding factor, with the hosts also holding a far inferior defensive record against their counterparts.
All of this should make for great action with Newcastle’s natural ability to smother a team. Dwight Gayle may even return to the side after injury has been a burden over the last few weeks.
Despite missing the last few weeks, Gayle still sits joint top of the scoring charts in the division with Leeds’s Chris Wood on 20 goals.
Gouffran played as a makeshift striker against Brighton on Tuesday night but Gayle’s impeding return will be a major boost for all involved with the Magpies.
By contrast, Huddersfield’s main striking threat has come from German Elias Kachunga, who has half the amount of goals as Gayle this season.
There can be no doubt that the John Smiths will be rocking in front of the sky cameras on Saturday evening in a tie that the whole of football will have an eager eye on.
Newcastle will head into the game as favourites but expect David Wagner to still make his presence felt from the stands and do his utmost to upset the apple cart.
That was an experienced player right there, watch and learn Mitro

ffs Colback, every fecking game, yellow card, not like he hasn’t been warned either 👿
kimtoon(Quote)
Jacks on a tightrope now for a lot of the game
kimtoon(Quote)
Great save Darlow
kimtoon(Quote)
That’s a good looking score. Especially with Brighton having lost!
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Colback is lucky not to be on a red card. I don’t think Ice would be happy seeing him banned for 3 game’s 😎
Stem(Quote)
He probably wouldn’t mind actually
Stem(Quote)
Darlow’s made a couple of great saves. Good goal by Murphy
Stem(Quote)
Didn’t see the first goal unfortunately.
Stem(Quote)
They’ll need to commit more forward now and we should have the opportunity to hit them on the break. Gayle on for last 30 mins.
Word of warning though – 2-0 a very dangerous score line.
Stuart79(Quote)
Need to sub Colback asap I think. Red wIting to happen, and he’s ****. I’d take him off and put Gayle on.
Dubai Toon(Quote)
In fairness to Huddersfield they look like they’ve got two or three very good stand out players. If they don’t go up they’ll make a bit of cash from them.
Stuart79(Quote)
I’m not keen on this sit back and defend a lead tactic but it’s Rafa’s way and it always has been.
They don’t look too clever at the back.
Stuart79(Quote)
better not give up a 2 goal lead, I would be looking to hook Colback around the 60/65 min mark anf throw on Gayle to kill them off.

kimtoon(Quote)
make that 4 🙄 🙁 shelve too now
kimtoon(Quote)
funrafa(Quote)
Clark, Anita, Colback and Shelvey all on yellows, at least one of them needs to come off as can’t afford a red here.

We’ve had an hour here and #nufc have dealt with everything that has been thrown at them. They’ve had just 24% of the ball but lead 2-0.
kimtoon(Quote)
just goes to show, possession football means ****** all.
kimtoon(Quote)
Well I said to bring Gayle on when we were 2 up… lol
Dubai Toon(Quote)
Glad to see Gayle but not for Murphy
kimtoon(Quote)
please rafa sub Colback NOW
kimtoon(Quote)
Good to see Gayle come on. Colback off next? Or possibly Perez in for Diame?
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Norwich certainly got a thumping today by Wednesday. Surprised by that score.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Gayle the defender 😆
kimtoon(Quote)
WTF!
Stuart79(Quote)
ffs
kimtoon(Quote)
well we’ve let them back in, need to get another pdq
kimtoon(Quote)
at least Colbacks off
kimtoon(Quote)
will we miss Murphy’s experience now I wonder
kimtoon(Quote)
What happened there? I see Huddersfield scored??
GeordieTwo(Quote)
how do you not have the right boots? don’t they check the pitch before
kimtoon(Quote)
We have been total ***** in the second half
Stem(Quote)
Just madness! We could end up losing this fucking thing if they score in the next five mins
Stuart79(Quote)
A weak penalty, just like our first one.
funrafa(Quote)
pen mate, Shelvey the culprit .
kimtoon(Quote)
loose this from 2 up and I will be mad as hell.
kimtoon(Quote)
Thanks for that Kimtoon and funrafa. Very frustrating not being able to watch.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
****, well that was coming wasn’t it… I hope we do not throw away a 2 goal lead. 👿
Dubai Toon(Quote)
I’m a little nervous watching Newcastle defend
Stem(Quote)
yedlin for Neets by looks of it ?
kimtoon(Quote)
i can’t watch either. I am reading the live commentary.
funrafa(Quote)
Just a little 😆
kimtoon(Quote)
The stats say they’re really dominating us. Come on lads!
GeordieTwo(Quote)
yedlin for Atsu then.
kimtoon(Quote)
Clinging on now like, gayle should have been able to cut that back
Newkie(Quote)
thought he may of took off neets who’s on a yellow.
kimtoon(Quote)
Gayleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee is back
kimtoon(Quote)
Our goals tonight have been absolutely appalling, but i’ll take that 🙄
Newkie(Quote)
Spot on Gayle!!!!
GeordieTwo(Quote)
And he is BACK, well done Gayle. I’ll take that
Onwards and upwards….
Dubai Toon(Quote)
A massive 3 points. We’re looking very good now. It sounds like it was a bit ugly but a win is a win.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
We are just not playing well though these days, but as long as we are winning.. crucial win that to give us a bit of breathing space.
Have a feeling that we will slip up though against some of the lesser teams as we often do, so we will need the cushion.
Dubai Toon(Quote)
I think that’s that now. 14 points needed to get 90 and no team hasn’t been promoted with 90 points.
Stuart79(Quote)
I.would bloody love it mate
Icedog(Quote)
Good Result in the end 🙂
Stem(Quote)
Great result. Thought Atsu did himself no favours tonight. Hardly noticed him. I like Anita but I think he looked a bit rusty. However a great team performance. A slip by their goalkeeper but full marks to Gayle for following up. Mitro would have been no where near it.
Groucho(Quote)
Pleased for the team and all the supporters, in the end it was comfortable I thought (just short of saying easy). Rafa knew exactly how to soak them up and they had no answer to it. Soft penalties aside it was a comfortable 0-2 away win I thought. Reading next, we will probably go to sleep and lose, this is Newcastle after all!! I think the last two games have shown that we are the top dogs in this league and I hope it gives our players more confidence against the scrappers.
DJG(Quote)
I enjoyed watching tonight’s game personally.
Defensively I think we’ve looked very good in the last 2 games – and we’re rock solid tonight.
Huddersfield had a lot of the ball, but other than the penalty, I don’t remember many (if any) shots inside the our box that they had.
We struggled a bit offensively and didn’t really get Shelvey on the ball enough doing what he’s best at.
Personally I don’t think Colback & Diame are close to good enough for this level (never mind the PL).
It was an industrious win today. Not pretty, but the type of win needed to get promoted – an achievement not too far away now I reckon.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Sharpy – I think it was a tactical masterclass by Rafa. He didn’t set us up to attack very much. He knew they’d struggle to break us down if we defended well. He’s clearly worked on it. I said before, he doesn’t lose too many big games.
Stuart79(Quote)
Wins for Swansea, Leicester and Palace… Oh no mackems. 😮
DJG(Quote)
Stu – I agree mate, and most of the team stayed very disciplined in the game plan. Colback is a liability.
I think Lascelles & Clark are really looking good as a CB partnership and with Darlow, Dummett and Yedlin/Anita all starting to play consistently well, we have a very foundation now.
Sharpy17(Quote)
That’s the thing for me. Teams now crowd Shelley and Diane and Colback aren’t good enough to pick up the slack and do something with the extra space. We’ll probably need 3 new CMs for next year
MDS(Quote)

Great performance from the lads. Huddersfield threw a lot at us but we coped. Beat the 2 nearest rivals away and equalled Keegan’s away results record 🙂
Bring on Reading…
Make you wonder a bit what happened at home v Bristol city.. St James’nerves??
Gashley(Quote)
I’m not the first person to suggest it, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Mbemba play next to Shelvey. Let’s face it Shelvey is no defender and Colback is a risk.
Groucho(Quote)
Yep that could well work, trouble is I’m not sure Rafa trust or rates him mate. They say he has struggled to settle and is having trouble with the language too.

Newcastle United set to unveil major name as new sponsor in ‘Premier League’ deal
We had better go up then.
kimtoon(Quote)
he played there in ANC and did real well by all accounts
icedog(Quote)
We’re so lucky to have Rafa. Man’s transformed the club on and off the field.
georgio(Quote)
I won’t argue against the penalty against Shelvey. Thought at first it was a fair shoulder charge but the replay proved me wrong. Quite unnecessary by Shelvey as their player was going nowhere. However the yellow Shelvey got should never have been given for what was a good tackle on the edge of the box. As for the penalty Ritchie got I don’t think it was as soft as all that. It only takes the slightest tap on the heels of a player in full flight to bring that player down.
Groucho(Quote)
Both pens were right imo, but as Groucho says, pointless by Jon jo as there was no real threat .
kimtoon(Quote)
strange when Gayle went to the sideline to change his boots he only changed one ???
