Blow for NUFC as star defender out for 5 weeks

News has broken tonight from The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, that NUFC right-back DeAndre Yedlin will be out of action for 5 weeks following scans on a thigh injury recently sustained.

The news comes following Yedlin’s visit to Los Angeles, where the severity of his thigh injury was assessed. The pacey full-back last featured from substitutes bench in the away win at Huddersfield, with the injury forcing him to sit out of the 0-0 draw at Reading & home defeat to Fulham.

Benitez had initially suggested the American would miss ‘1-2 weeks’, suggesting just a minor tear in his thigh, but the latest news suggests Yedlin will be missing for a longer period. Yedlin is a terrific athlete, whose pace & drive will be missed down the right hand side. It may also be of concern to Newcastle fans that Vurnon Anita, his immediate replacement, struggled to cope with the pace of Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon on Saturday. It’s a blow for NUFC but one we must cope with if we are to maintain our promotion bid in the weeks to come.
