The Mirror reported late last night that Newcastle will make a £10m move for Fulham star Tom Cairney this summer, with the playmaker one of Benitez’s top targets.
Rafa is thought to be a real admirer of the Scottish midfielder, having sent scouts to watch him in Fulham’s 4-1 win over Huddersfield on Saturday.
I watched the game and Cairney was superb. He makes Fulham tick and is the sort of forward thinking player we lack. He plays with his head up, possesses real quality on the ball and looks a player ready to make the step up to the Premier League.
The 26 year-old also ran the show when Fulham visited St. James’ Park last month, scoring a stunning long range strike to boot. With 11 goals and 10 assists this season, he’s had an outstanding season.
Newcastle’s hopes of landing the talented midfielder may hinge on Fulham’s promotion push, however. They are in fine form and look set to get their shot at the Premier League themselves via this years play-offs.
Time will tell, but from what i’ve seen, Cairney would be a very decent signing should we earn promotion.
