The Daily Mail are crediting Newcastle United with an interest in highly rated Celtic centre-back Jozo Simunovic today.
The report claims Rafa Benitez is an ‘admirer’ of the 22 year-old defender, with clubs in Spain, Italy, Germany and England all sending scouts to watch the £9m rated man this season.
Simunovic has been a key part of the Hoops title winning campaign this season, with Brendan Rodgers desperate to keep the 6ft 3′ Croatian at Celtic Park this summer:
‘He’s got all the attributes and still has improvements to make, of course, but if you’re a top club you would want someone like him.
‘He’s very much a part of what we’re building here.’
Fans may be sceptical about the signing of an SPL player, however it must be said that several players have gone on to great things having swapped Celtic for the Premier League over recent years.
For example, Virgil Van Dijk. He has taken the Premier League by storm, with the centre-back now linked with big money moves to some of Europe’s elite sides.
We are undoubtedly in need of a centre-back this summer and a player of Simunovic’s presence and potential would not go amiss.
Here’s his monster tackle in the Old Firm derby over the weekend:

Would be a huge step down for him joining Newcastle.
