Former NUFC boss Chris Hughton has sent a message of congratulations to Newcastle United following yesterday’s heartache – seeing his Brighton side lose out on the league title to a late goal at Villa Park.
Newcastle were 3-0 up at St. James’ Park, but our title hopes relied on events at Aston Villa. Brighton looked all set to lift the trophy until an 89th minute Jack Grealish strike denied Hughton’s men of champions status.
A bitter pill to swallow, but the gracious Chris Hughton said the following after seeing his side lose out on the title:
“I’d like to congratulate Newcastle on a wonderful season – they’ve just beaten us to it.”
“I think the two best teams this season are the two that have gone up automatically.”
Hughton’s comments ooze class once again. Considering the heartache he and his side must have been through yesterday, this was a nice touch from Chris, echoing just what a gentleman he is.
Brighton have had a superb season and should hold their heads up high as they prepare for the Premier League next season. A bad day in an otherwise brilliant season for the Seagulls.
See you next year, Chris!
