Summer signing wants out less than 12 months into his NUFC career

According to Belgian newspaper Hat Nieuwsblad, Matz Sels wants to leave Newcastle this summer – less than 12 months after the goalkeeper signed for the Magpies.

The report suggests Sels is hoping for a return to Gent to end his nightmare spell at St. James’ and could be loaned back to the Belgian side this summer.

Rafa Benitez made the Belgian international his first summer signing in June last year, with the 25 year-old stopper joining for a reported fee of £4.5m from KAA Gent.

Sels was immediately made the Magpies no.1, being thrown into the side in the opening day defeat to Fulham. Since then, however, his time on Tyneside has gone from bad to worse.

He’s made just 14 appearances in all competitions this season and, after a string of unconvincing displays, lost his place in the starting line up to Karl Darlow.

To make things worse, Rob Elliot’s return to fitness has seen Sels drop to 3rd choice in the United ranks, failing to even make the match day squad in recent months.

You don’t become a bad keeper over night, but with several capable goalkeepers already at Rafa’s disposal, Sels looks unlikely to revive his career at Newcastle.

A move away may make sense for all parties.
