Rafa Benitez eyeing surprise summer move for ex-NUFC midfielder?

According to French newspaper L’EQUIPE, Newcastle United are interested in bringing former midfielder Mehdi Abeid back to the club this summer.

The 24-year-old currently plays for Ligue 1 side Dijon, with his impressive campaign helping the lower league side to safety in France last season. As a result, Newcastle are believed to have been one of several clubs ‘monitoring his progress’.

Abeid signed for Newcastle from Lens in 2011. He spent 4 years at the club, making just 21 first team appearances before being sold in 2015 to Panathinaikos following a successful loan spell in Greece.

He then signed a 3-year contract with French side Dijon last summer and has been catching the eye in Ligue 1 this season, scoring 3 goals and assisting 2 in 28 appearances.

Talking about his future he recently said:

“I am very attached to the DFCO and therefore to the Dijon project, but I do not close any doors,

Abeid showed promise in his rare appearances for the Newcastle and looked eager to make an impression on Tyneside, but was never given a fair run by Alan Pardew. He looked to be well built, athletic and a strong runner with the ball and is clearly putting this potential to good use in France nowadays.

I’d have entertained his return this time last season, but, unless he’s developed beyond recognition following regular first team football over the past 2 years, I can’t see this one happening given our need for Premier League ready players.

That being said, check out this highlight reel. Best bits or not, he looks quite impressive!
