Newcastle United ‘edging closer’ to announcing first summer signing

Newcastle are understood to be closing in one their first summer signing, and that man looks likely to be Eibar centre-back Florian Lejeune according to several details that emerged from Spain last night.

After a frustrating few weeks of being linked with every name under the sun without any real activity, The Chronicle have announced that we are now ‘edging closer’ to announcing our first summer, also revealing that a ‘number of deals are on the table’ (some thought to be loan offers), with several of those awaiting a final decision for those away on holiday.

A deal for Eibar centre-back Florian Lejeune is one to watch, however, with several Spanish outlets, including a local radio station, revealing that the La Liga centre-back’s £8.7m release clause has been met and the player has left Eibar to complete a move to Newcastle. The deal could to be completed in the ‘next few days’.

It is also worth noting that Eibar have just signed a new centre-back – Lejeune’s replacement perhaps?

Despite Newcastle’s current lack of transfer activity, The Chronicle also disclosed that those close to Benitez believe ‘no manager in United’s recent history has worked harder than him to make things happen’, with the Spaniard understood to be working tirelessly on his extensive list of summer targets behind the scenes at NUFC.

It sounds like a breakthrough is close. Watch this space folks..
