Our hopes of signing Fulham star Tom Cairney appear to have been dashed today, as the talented midfielder has signed a new deal at Craven Cottage, extending his contract until 2021.
It’s no secret that Cairney’s performances caught the eye of Rafa Benitez last season, with the Scottish International being the only player to reach double figures in both goals (13) and assists (11) in the Championship last season.
Newcastle’s chances of luring Cairney to Tyneside appeared to have been boosted after Fulham were knocked out of the play-off’s earlier this summer, confirming their Championship status for the upcoming season, however Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic recently confirmed that we had a £20m bid turned down in January, stating they had no intention of selling one of their prize assets this summer.
At 26, I imagined Cairney would push for a Premier League move this summer, however his loyalty is admirable.
Newcastle’s need for midfield creativity goes on and it looks like Cairney can now be crossed off that list, but if Fulham were rejecting substantial bids back in January, maybe we took the hint and are right to move on.
I’m not convinced Cairney is worth anything above the £20m mark – even in this day & age of crazy transfer fees!
