Pinch of salt alert, but reports in Portugal claimed last night that Newcastle have made a club record €40m bid (£35m) for Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost – only for it to be rejected according to Jornal de Notícias.
Whilst this monstrous bid appears wildly unlikely, this is not the first time us Newcastle fans have been linked with Bas Dost, with it being widely understood that United tracked the Dutchman during his Wolfsburg days.
At the time Dost was believed to be available for as little as €10.5m, but a year on and the 6ft 5′ striker has scored 36 goals in his debut for Sporting Lisbon – a tally only beaten by Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Jornal de Notícias claim Newcastle’s €40m bid has been rejecting, with Sporting Lisbon unwilling to let their star striker leave for anything less than his €60m buy-out clause.
As impressive as Dost’s record may be, I don’t see Newcastle United spending £35m on one player this summer, never mind a 28-year-old who they had the chance to sign for under £10m just last summer!

Yes, the “3 week haggling” could have been to minimise expenditure FOR this one . . . . no, I don’t believe it either !!!
