Florian Lejeune reveals brilliant story about his first phone-call with Rafa Benitez

Newcastle United’s latest signing Florian Lejeune was unveiled to the press today and shared a brilliant story about when he was first contacted by Rafa Benitez this summer, claiming he thought the Spaniard’s call was a prank!

Speaking to the media today, the £8.7m centre-back said:

“Getting a call from Rafa Benitez was absolutely amazing, and I could only say yes. It was like a dream.”

“When I got the call, I thought it was a prank so I didn’t say anything!”

“After a few hours, I said ‘yes, that WAS Benitez’, so I had to say yes.”

This was an amusing tale which also highlights the pulling power of Rafa Benitez, with it being said that Lejeune’s mind was made up straight away, despite late interest from Serie A giants Roma – who could’ve offered him Champions League football.

The former Manchester City man then delivered a promising message to the fans, saying he will give it his all to prove his worth at the club.

“I will give it my all. I always give my all, and it will be up to the supporters to see the results. I don’t really like talking about myself but I always give my all.

“It will then be up to the supporters to have an opinion.”

“What happened with Manchester City is over.”

“I have nothing to prove to them, just the fans here.”

Lejeune seems to speak well and has said all the right things. Here’s hoping he can deliver on the pitch next season at the heart of Benitez’s back four.
