According to the club’s official media partner, The Mirror, Newcastle have moved into pole position to sign former Manchester City winger Jesus Navas on a free agent.
The Spanish International is a free agent after seeing his contract expire at the Etihad this summer and was close to sealing a return to Sevilla, however talks are believed to have stalled after the La Liga side refused to up their contract offer of £1.3million a year.
The Mirror state that the situation has alerted Rafa Benitez, who has put a proposal to the player’s agent.
Navas failed to hit the heights at the Etihad since his £15m move from Sevilla in 2013, but he will be a player fellow Spaniard Benitez will be well aware of.
He bagged just 4 goals in 123 games for City however, and despite racking up 26 assists, I envisage him losing his pace and ability to take on a man soon enough, with him turning 32 in November.
Given his age and lack of impact during his time in the Premier League, this is not a deal we feel Newcastle should pursue.
