Newcastle have today confirmed the signing of England U-21 star Jacob Murphy, and the boyhood fan has spoken out about how his love for the club all started, also posting a moving video on his personal Twitter account – showing him as a young NUFC supporter.
Murphy arrives from Norwich, joining for a fee of £10m rising to £12m and he has since explained to NUFC TV just why Newcastle have always been the club closest to his heart:
“It was a childhood dream of mine to come represent Newcastle, I can’t wait to get started.”
“A proud moment for myself, my family – everyone crazy crazy Newcastle supporters. So the move to come here was a no-brainer.”
“My mother is from Birtley, my dad from Ashington, the rest of my family are from Gateshead. So they have always been Newcastle supporters and that is the team I chose to follow.”
“I have been getting messages from them (family) and they are really excited.”
“Having the Newcastle badge on my chest, I can’t think of anything better.”
Murphy then went on to talk about his first game at St. James’ Park and some of the United players that have inspired him over the
years:
“My first Newcastle game – my dad took me and my brother to see Newcastle play PSV in the UEFA Cup (a 2-1 win on 14 April 2004), Alan Shearer and Gary Speed got the goals.”
“Laurent Robert with a wand of a left foot, he used to cannon ball everything in. Alan Shearer is just a God.”
“Playing last season at St James Park with Norwich, it is just magical. I wanted to be part of that.”
“Being at Norwich at the time we were gutted we didn’t win but the passion from the Newcastle fans, you saw what it meant to them.”
What a feeling!! Delighted to sign for Newcastle United FC… can't wait to get started, thank you for all your messages! #NUFC ⚫️⚪️⚫️⚪️ pic.twitter.com/dqOIyuL68E

It’s a great story and Murphy is exactly the sort of player we need at Newcastle. His talent, passion for the club and hunger to succeed at his boyhood club makes him an exciting and loveable addition to our ranks.
I can’t wait to see him pull on the black & white shirt and see what he can do!
