Norwich fans’ interesting reaction to Jacob Murphy’s £12m move to NUFC

Jacob Murphy completed his £10m move (rising to £12m) to Newcastle yesterday, and following the announcement, Norwich fans have taken to Twitter to have their say on his big money transfer to Tyneside.

Murphy enjoyed a breakthrough season at Norwich last season, racking up 13 goals and 6 assists in all competitions for The Canaries, however the 22-year old is still considered to be a player with ‘potential’ opposed to the finished article.

We took to Twitter to get the thoughts of those who know him well at Norwich City and it made for some interesting reading:

Some really interesting comments.

It’s clear that Norwich fans not only hold him in high regard as a player, but also as a person and professional.

There is some interesting suggestions that he would’ve benefited from another season with Norwich in the Championship, but with Murphy’s rise from League One, to the Championship, to then performing for England U-21’s on the International stage, you can see why Benitez believes he’s capable of making the step up once again.

  1. The problem with Norwich being able to progress is Norwich fans. They (I would say we, but can’t associate with most) are so deluded it’s unbelievable. They are positive to the point where it’s regressive and counter intuitive. Jacob Murphy doesn’t not have much potential, he’s 22 (a year younger than Kane and older than Alli). He vanished for the second half of the season and has moved to a club that will swallow his career. I used to like Newcastle until they became the club they are and I genuinely didn’t realise Murphy was thick enough to move there. I would totally understand him going to a solid club like Brom or Saints, but he can say goodbye to his career. He’s almost as deluded as Norwich fans. They even manage to bring Redmond into it, who was an absolutely useless turd for us (bar two playoff games in 3 whole seasons) and getting £11m for him was robbing Saints. Say hello to Aaron Lennon, Jermaine Pennant and Shaun Wright Phillips in footballing abyss for me Jacob…if you are lucky enough to get another ‘big opportunity’, don’t be a total tool and think about what awaits.

  2. Jeff why the **** would him coming too Newcastle swallow his Career ? We are no Top 6 side where he will only sit on the bench .we are back in the top tier and this is a chance for the lad too make a name for himself under a top class manager at a club that he has supporter since being a kid . Get real and get over the fact you have lost a player too a team a division higher .

  3. To all Newcastle fans, please excuse the “supposed” Norwich fan above. We have quite a few pessimists in our ranks, who rarely say anything positive. I can say, hand on heart, that you have a very promising player indeed. While he is prone to the odd defensive lapse in concentration (see Ipswich at home), he’s the type of flair player who will create something from nothing (again, see Ipswich at home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9CVOJVB17o). We are gutted to lose him, but we have an equal, if not better, replacement in the form of his brother, Josh. Once you see Jacob play, you will understand why you’ve paid £12.5M for his signature. I predict he will be a great player for you.

On a negative note, due to your poor recruitment strategy this summer (Murphy aside), I’m predicting you’ll come back down again. Your summer has looked remarkably similar to our last in the PL in 2015.

  4. Have to add to what Daniel has said…

We have quite a few Johnny come lately type ‘fans’ at Norwich whose sense of entitlement stretches beyond the event horizon. They can’t, and won’t, accept that there are bigger clubs that us out there, wealthier clubs out there, more popular clubs out there and fans who are, at least, just as passionate and caring about their clubs as they believe they are.

In short, they’re not very realistic!

Newcastle is a great move for Jacob, both professionally and personally. If he performs and you do well, he’ll never want to move away (a’la Shearer) and who could blame him? He’ll have good days, great days and yes, some stinkers as well. But there isn’t a footballer who doesn’t.

Football’s pecking order dictated that we didn’t want to lose him but Newcastle lured him away just as fans of Coventry and Barnsley didn’t want to lose Watkins and Maddison-but we lured them away, just as fans of Luton didn’t want to lose Cam McGeehan (one we should have kept) but Barnsley, yep, lured him away. Its just how it is and will, pretty much, always be.

Jacob Murphy, signed for nothing, has just made Norwich nearly £13 million. How can we begrudge him the childhood dream he gets in return? And how many of his critics would wave away the opportunity of realising their own childhood dream because of what other people might think? None of them.

Look after him. He is going to be one hell of a player but he is a character as well. Enjoy. If we get back up next season, he’ll get a huge welcome when you head down to Carrow Road in 2018/19…
