Blow for Benitez as NUFC star suffers injury ahead of season opener against Spurs

Rafa Benitez has been dealt a blow ahead of the season opener against Tottenham next Sunday, with the NUFC boss confirming that DeAndre Yedlin looks set to spend 2-3 weeks on the sidelines.

Benitez confirmed the injury after our 3-1 win over Wolfsburg yesterday, saying the following to NUFC TV after being asked why the American missed out on the match-day squad:

“We have to wait.

“We think two or three weeks he (Yedlin) will be out – that is the feeling.

“We have to be sure about the other players and that they are ready to play in his position.”

The marauding right-back has fast became one of our most effective players, building a promising partnership with Matt Ritchie down the right, and this news means he looks almost certain to sit out of next weekends Premier League opener against his former club Spurs.

With this in mind, NUFC new-boy Javier Manquillo will almost certainly fill in at right-back when Tottenham come to town next weekend, and if we can see a repeat of his assured display against Wolfsburg, we may just be in safe hands.

A bit of a blow ahead of what promises to be a tough start back to life in the Premier League, but hopefully DeAndre can make a full recovery and get back in action ASAP.
