The 21-year old striker spent periods of last season on loan with League One clubs Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe and after bagging 12 goals in the third tier last time out, looks set for a spell with Wigan – who were relegated from the Championship over the 2016/17 campaign.
Toney will arrive in superb form, having bagged 6 goals in 4 pre-season friendlies for the U-23’s this summer, including a hat-trick in the our 4-1 win in the final of the Whitby Town Challenge cup final last week.
Wigan will be looking to gain automatic promotion back to the Championship next season and it looks to be a decent move for Toney, who’s long term future could lie on Tyneside if he continues to show the sort of form he has over the last 12 months.
