Rafa Benitez opens up about his conversation with Arsene Wenger over Arsenal’s Lucas Perez

Rafa Benitez has revealed on Talksport today that he spoke with Arsene Wenger yesterday about want-away forward Lucas Perez, however has remained coy on Newcastle’s hopes of signing the Spaniard.

Benitez has been left, right and centre today building up to the new season with Newcastle United, and during an interview on Talksport, he had the following to say when asked if Newcastle will sign the Arsenal striker:

“I was talking with Arsene yesterday because we had the manager’s meeting and I said ‘Listen, we have to talk”

“He said ‘Listen, you have some money?’ – I like the player but it’s too soon to talk about that.”

Benitez travelled to the annual pre-season meeting of Premier League managers in London yesterday and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger was also present, explaining how the conversation took place.

Newcastle are yet to make any formal bid for Perez according to reports – with claims that we would prefer a loan deal – however his reasonable asking price of £13.4m suggests there is surely a deal there to be done.

Benitez is clearly a fan of Perez and with his chase for a striker becoming more and more desperate by the day, we can only hope to see some progress on that front in the coming days and weeks.
