Former Newcastle United assistant Dean Saunders has made a somewhat ridiculous comments about Newcastle United fans, stating that the Geordie faithful ‘think they should be in the top four or five’ whilst speaking on Talksport today.
Whilst it seems Saunders’ comments were said in good will, it was a slightly barmy comment and one that doesn’t look great on ourselves, painting a picture of a severely deluded fanbase.
Here’s his comments in full on Talksport this morning:
“Newcastle are a massive club with 50,000 people there queuing up to get in (and) another 10,000 outside the ground. The fans think they should be in the top four or five. That’s what the fans want.
“(Rafa) Benitez looked like the man to take them there but money talks. Unless something happens, he’s that type of character that won’t stand for it.
“He’s obviously been told ‘get us back up, when we get into the Premier League, we’ll challenge towards the top’. I don’t think he will be prepared to manage a team that is treading water in the Premier League.”
Of course we would love to return to the glory days and get ourselves back in England’s top four, but for Dean to say we expect that is something quite different.
I think I speak on behalf of most Newcastle fans in saying that we see Benitez as hope and a manager who can allow us to compete once again, not a miracle workers who’s going to get us back into the Champions League anytime soon.
Anyhow, here’s some of the amusing reactions online to Saunders’ comment today:
Well yes, Dean, they did when you were Souness' number two because they had been for the three years before you arrived! ?
