Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has stated that winning a domestic cup is one of the priorities for the Magpies during the current campaign.
Newcastle United have endured numerous difficult years in recent times and having won promotion last term, the Magpies’ immediate ambition during the current Premier League campaign will be to preserve their top flight status.
However, owner Mike Ashley has gone on to uncharacteristically state that Newcastle are confident of finishing in midtable this season and explained that his side will go all out in order to win one of the domestic cups during the current campaign.
Ashley, speaking to Sky Sports, said, “I get fans saying I’m not interested in winning a cup. It’s about priorities, I just didn’t want to lie to the fans.
“I don’t want to turn out and turn to the fans when we are playing nine reserves and pretend we were doing anything other than making the Premier League a priority.
“I actually now believe that Newcastle will look to make mid-table this season and maybe we can make the cup a priority this season. We can get ourselves safe and then go for a cup.
“It means that in my few years at Newcastle United I might be able to win something other than a Championship trophy.”
During Ashley’s tenure, Newcastle United have always made staying in the Premier League the main priority and have completely ignored the cups, usually fielding reserves squads.
However, Ashley’s recent comments about winning trophies will surely come as music to the ears of the Newcastle faithful and it will be interesting to see if indeed the Magpies are able to launch strong bid to win either the EFL or the FA Cup this season.
