As reported by the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are set to lose out in the race to secure the services of Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
With Matz Sels having already departed and the likes of Tim Krul and Karl Darlow also being strongly touted with moves away, Newcastle United have been in the market to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and Spanish international Pepe Reina was strongly linked with the Magpies a few weeks ago.
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez knows Reina very well from their time together at Liverpool and Napoli, and a reunion between the two Spaniards at St. James’ Park seemed like a real possibility.
However in a blow to Newcastle’s hopes of signing Reina, the player’s agent has confirmed that French giants Paris Saint-Germain have now expressed an interest in signing the former Barcelona custodian and are said to be ready to splash as much as £6.5million to sign the 34-year-old this summer.
Reina’s agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon said, “I can only say that Paris Saint-Germain interest in Reina is real. However, only the clubs can confirm whether there are any formal offers on the table. “One thing is certain, he will not renew his contract.”
Newcastle have already missed out on their top goalkeeping target in Willy Caballero earlier on in the summer to Chelsea and failing to sign Reina will surely further frustrate Benitez.
