Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has stated that the Newcastle United hierarchy have not provided manager Rafael Benitez with a squad that is good enough to compete in the Premier League.
Newcastle United’s struggles during the summer transfer window were well documented and while manager Rafael Benitez as well as the fans were told that the Magpies would be bringing in a couple of new faces to St. James’ Park on deadline day, they proved to be empty promises at the end.
Now Benitez has been left with a squad which may not be able to sufficiently compete in the Premier League and Newcastle United could well be embroiled in a relegation battle this season if things go wrong in regards to injuries.
Ex-Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson recently rated Newcastle’s transfer activity over the summer and stated that the club hierarchy have let Benitez down by not handing him the squad he needs to compete in the English top flight.
Merson said, “I thought Newcastle were going to have a real go after getting promoted. They have got an unbelievable manager in Rafa Benitez, but I don’t think they’ve done enough to give him the squad he needs. I look at the players that have come in and they are not for me.”
