Sam Allardyce is often partial to being outspoken and outlandish, and his latest comments are just that, as the former Newcastle manager has stated Rafa Benitez and the NUFC fans could not have ask for any more from Mike Ashley this summer.
The ex-NUFC boss- who spent little over 6 months on Tyneside across the 2007/08 season – has been speaking to talkSPORT about his former club, suggesting the Toon Army fans and Rafa Benitez are expecting too much of their club and Mike Ashley:
“Mike has openly said he’s given Rafa all the money he could possibly give him that’s generated by Newcastle – so I don’t think you can ask anymore than that. But it’s how you spend that money and who you spend it on.
“Of course he openly said you can’t compete with Manchester City, as much as the fans would want them to – because there’s a lot up them up there – they can’t compete with Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea even perhaps Everton, certainly not Liverpool.
“Financially they just can’t get there; you have to do the best you possibly can with what you get.
“ Newcastle should be happy to finish in the Premier League for next season and then build from there and try not to put too much pressure on the players.”
Ridiculous comments from Allardyce – another man who clearly has no idea of what we fans actually expect. We don’t demand to compete with the Manchester City’s of this world, and would even accept that Everton are out of our league at present – failing to compete with the likes of Stoke and West Brom is our issue.
He defends Ashley’s backing of Benitez this summer, but if you look at the numbers, it’s clear the billionaire tycoon has not handed Rafa ‘every penny’ from promotion and player sales given our net spend of little over £10m.
