Paul Merson’s priceless pre-match comments on Swansea vs Newcastle have came back to bite him

It’s fair to say that a number of Sky Sports pundits have given pretty damning predictions or views on Newcastle United over the past few months, and Paul Merson’s pre-match comments for Sunday’s game have come back to bite him in priceless fashion.

As seen in the video below, the Sky pundit predicted Tammy Abraham to be the games ‘elite player’, believing he would get on the scoresheet, also seeing Alfie Mawson as goal threat for the hosts. He then stated that he expects Swansea to edge it, in a series of predictions that didn’t exactly go to plan:

As we all know, Abraham missed a huge chance after rounding Rob Elliot, Mawson missed a golden chance with his head and it was in fact Newcastle who edged it, with the above clip amusing many of the Toon Army after Merson offered yet another bleak outcome for Newcastle.

Merson predicted Tottenham would be a ‘cricket score’ on the opening day, said we’d scrape a point at Huddersfield, lose 2-0 at home to West Ham and lose 2-0 at Swansea, meaning he anticipated us having just 1 point from our opening 4.

We head into Stoke on Saturday with 6 points and I look forward to his prediction. Hopefully he expects a defeat – he’s nearly always got it wrong so far!

  1. I like and agree with your views, but your grammar is God awful.
Have “came ” back? Please, it’s offensive and puts off a reader to the point of not wanting to read any further. Which is why I have written this before I’ve finished the article.

  2. In fairness, if Abraham had scored after rounding the keeper, and Mawson had scored from his free header, resulting in Swansea winning 2-1, then his prediction would have been pretty accurate. I don’t like Merson, but really don’t see why you’re butchering him for this.

  3. I would imagine it’s down to the fact he predicted every toon game last season incorrect (thankfully) and that Rafa would be gone already! His track record for Newcastle directly reflects his gambling skills!
