20 years ago last week, Colombian striker Tino Asprilla scored a memorable hat-trick in a 3-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League and the colourful character has been reminiscing about hit time on Tyneside – sharing a hilarious story about how he ‘tricked’ Geordie women into partying back at his house.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the 47-year old shared a sensational story about his party lifestyle in the Toon, explaining how having David Ginola as his neighbour came in handy:
“There were many beautiful women in Newcastle,”
“Sometimes I tricked them by saying, ‘there is a party back at my house and Ginola is there’.
“They’d come back and be like, ‘where is Ginola?!’. ‘Ah don’t worry,’ I’d say, ‘He’ll be back shortly’.”
Tino then went on to admit that the team would often go out together due to the togetherness in the dressing room, however it seems Keegan wasn’t too pleased about the parties – not that Tino minded:
“We used to go out as a team all of the time and had an amazing spirit between us.
“Kevin Keegan wasn’t too happy about the parties though. I don’t know why, we were having a good time!”
Asprilla scored only nine times in 48 league matches, yet bagged in impressive 9 goals in just 11 European games during his time on Tyneside. It’s therefore fair to say that he endured a mixed spell at Newcastle, where he seemed to score more with ladies (especially if Ginola was around!) than he did on the pitch!
