If Paul Merson doesn’t have something against Newcastle United he’s got a funny way of showing it. The Sky Sports pundit has been back at it again with his Premier League predictions and reckons we should take a point at Brighton ‘all day long’, with his 1-1 prediction for Sunday being the SIXTH game in a row where he’s suggested we won’t win.
Quite incredibly, despite three wins on the bounce and a set of ‘winnable’ fixtures to start our season, we’d be second bottom in the table with just 2 points if Paul Merson’s predictions had been true. Instead we’re 4th with 9 points..
Merson previously predicted we’d get a point at Huddersfield and another at home to Stoke, forecasting defeats for our other three (two of which we won!).
Anyhow, here’s Paul’s thoughts ahead of Sunday’s game with Brighton – along with a few rather patronising comments and back-handed compliments along the way:
“I know it’s only five games but Newcastle have done superbly to get into the top four – not many people saw that coming!
“Their fans will be full of confidence and looking for another win but Brighton make it difficult for opponents at the Amex. Man City were made to work hard and West Brom were dispatched 3-1.
“A draw would be a good result for the visitors, they should take that all day long.”
PREDICTION – Brighton 1-1 Newcastle
I do actually agree that Brighton make it difficult at their own place and I expect a tough game, but to say we’d take a draw ‘all day long’ after three successive wins is a little patronising from Paul.
We shall see on Sunday, but Merson’s tendency to get these wrong suggests someone’s going to win! Here’s hoping it’s us.
