Ian Wright changes his tune on NUFC, now ‘fancying us’ to do well – but only on ONE condition

Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright has changed his tune on our prospects for the new season, now claiming that he ‘quite like’s’ us and ‘fancy’s us’ to do well this season IF we can be better in the final third – quite a shift from his comments in August, saying we ‘weren’t strong enough to perform well’.

The former Arsenal striker appeared on Sky Sports’ ‘The Debate’ this week and claimed that he is now backing us to stay up and have a decent season, praising the club and captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I quite like Newcastle…

“I like their captain, Jamaal Lascelles.

“I like the way that he talks, I like the way that he plays.

“If they can nick a couple more goals up front, getting them to settle down when they are playing well in a game, and there’s a great noise up at St James Park, then I fancy them (to do ok this season).”

For once, these are pretty bang on comments about us. They probably echo what a lot of us Newcastle fans think. We like our honest, hard working team, have a lot of time for our captain and would admit that a lack of goals up top appears to be our biggest problem.

Joselu’s goal on Sunday was a potentially huge moment for him, but with Perez not offering enough offensively, Gayle seeming out of sorts and questions over Mitrovic’s ability to be trusted by Benitez, we aren’t blessed with guaranteed goals up top and Wright is spot on here – a few more goals up top could make life so much easier for ourselves.

These comments from Wright do represent a real change in opinion from the pundit however.

Here’s what he had to say prior to the big kick off when speaking on Sky Sports in August, suggesting he had little faith in this Newcastle United team:

“I don’t think Newcastle are strong enough to perform well at the moment.”

Quite a contrast, however it’s good to see he’s been proved wrong thus far and nice to see a pundit appreciate what we’ve done so far during our solid start to the season.
