NUFC given injury scare as Jonjo Shelvey suffers training injury ahead of Southampton away

Rafa Benitez has been handed yet another injury scare yesterday, with Jonjo Shelvey suffering a broken finger at the training Benton training base – however the club are confident he’ll be able to face Southampton next Sunday according to The Chronicle.

Premier League regulations prevent players from wearing casts, however Shelvey’s injury is fortunately not deemed serious enough to warrant one, meaning he should be available to play wearing an FA permitted lightweight cast.

He has a fracture his left hand, but is expected to train as normal over the coming week and join the squad once again for next weekend’s game – a relief to Benitez after injury concerns over Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu have already emerged over the international break.

It will be interesting to see if Shelvey will retain his place at St. Mary’s next Sunday, with Isaac Hayden having started in every away game so far this season.

For me, Shelvey’s performance alongside Merino against Liverpool has justified his inclusion. The pair have the potential to form a formidable partnership and I’d like to see it given a chance once again.

Would you like to see Shelvey play alongside Merino next weekend or would you bring Hayden back into the side?
