Paul Merson stoops to new low in his prediction for Newcastle vs Crystal Palace this weekend

It’s that time of the week again. Paul Merson has made his masterful prediction for our game against Crystal Palace this weekend and it’s quite possibly worse than ever before, as he makes it NINE games without predicting a win for NUFC – even at home to rock bottom Palace!

Given we’re playing at home to a side who hadn’t scored a goal before last weekend, you might have expected him to predict his first NUFC win of the season? Of course not!

In all fairness, a draw could just occur, but Merson’s comments are not complimentary once again, with the odd comments that will be sure to get fans’ backs up.

Here’s his slightly one sided assessment ahead of tomorrow’s game:

“What a result for Palace against Chelsea, and it just shows you how important and good Wilfried Zaha is, how big a player he is in that side.

“This is another big, big game, and I can’t really separate them. You like to think Palace have turned the corner, but if they lose this they are virtually back to where they were the week before the Chelsea game, because they would have highlighted this game as a potential three points.

“If they can get a draw, it’s been a great couple weekends for Palace.”

Merson’s prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Crystal Palace

Firstly, there’s not a single mention of us here really – which has become a theme in his comments in recent weeks.

The only reference being that he really ‘can’t separate’ the two sides. The bloke’s entitled to his opinion, but it feels like this comment does its best to undermine our good start to the season. Given we’re 9th on 11 points and have looked far better than most expected, where as Palace are rock bottom with 3 points, with last weekend’s win  (and first goal!) being their first this season, it really is an odd thing to say?

Yes they arrive on the back of their first win of the season – against Chelsea too – but they’ve lost their last four away games by an aggregate score of 11-0!

We would be joint bottom of the league alongside Palace on just THREE points if his predictions had come to life this season, so I suppose he has struggled to separate us as far as his predictions are concerned!

Even our sponsors found it all a bit amusing!

As always, let’s hope we prove him wrong once again (with a win, not a defeat!). Something we’ve done pretty well thus far.
