Mikel Merino sends impressive message to NUFC fans as he opens up about his future ambitions

NUFC new-boy Mikel Merino has sent an impressive message to his adoring fans following his match winning goal on Saturday, admitting he has ‘big ambitions’ in the game – but firmly believing that he has everything he needs at Newcastle United to achieve them with us.

The Spanish U-21 international arrived on an initial season-long loan deal from Borussia Dortmund over the summer, but that deal became a permanent one earlier this month, seeing him arrive for a bargain fee of just £7m.

To say we’ve been impressed by him is an understatement. His ability on the ball, his work for the team off it and his attitude off the pitch has all been so promising – so much so, there’s already several fans wondering just how long it’ll be before the big boys come knocking on our door.

In his latest interview below, he admits he has big ambitions in the game, but reiterates his desire to keep doing his job, hoping he will one day fulfil his dreams with us at Newcastle – a football club and city he appears to have taken little time to fall in love with:

“As a player you always want to have big ambitions, to think and dream big, I am no different,”

“I’m not going to say I want to do this or that because I am just young. I have other things to do first.

“The important thing is to think about the small steps and they could lead to bigger things like the national team at some point.

“I just want to care about this team, my team-mates and keep improving. I think dreams will be filled if I do the right job.

“I am in the right place because I have the confidence from the coach, the people and my team-mates.

“I am happy here, the way they live here, the type of city and the people in it. Now I am happy here and I think that’s good for me.

“I have to say thanks to everyone for believing in me and I want to carry on.”

Another brilliant interview from the Spaniard, who seems as mature and measured off the pitch as he is majestic on it.

A refreshing approach from Merino, who appears to have a wise head on young shoulders. He has big dreams – and why not for a player of his potential – however he seems so focused on working hard and doing the right things on and off the pitch for us to make his dreams a reality.

He seems focused, driven, hard working and a player who feels right at home here. If he can realise his potential on Tyneside then we have one hell of a player on our hands!
