Some transfer news coming from France today, with Le10Sport claiming Newcastle are set to battle it out with Sevilla for the ‘cut-price’ signature of highly-rated French U-21 winger Jonathan Bamba in January.
Rafa Benitez was credited with an interest in the St. Etienne winger over the summer – so this isn’t the first time we’ve seen him mentioned as a potential target of the Spaniard’s.
The 21-year old’s contract runs out in the summer, and having failed to sign a new deal with the French side, it’s being reported that we could make our move this winter to secure him for a bargain fee.
Bamba is said to be attracting interest from ‘several clubs’ however, with one of them being Sevilla according to the report from France today.
He can play down either flank and has sometimes operated as a striker for St Etienne this season, seeing him bag an impressive 4 goals and 1 assist in just 8 games for the Ligue 1 side this season.
Whilst many fans will be reluctant to see us sign from France again after recent failings, the signing of a France U-21 international for a low fee may be quite a low risk deal. Just look how it worked out with Merino!
Here’s the Frenchman in action for St Etienne this season – what a goal!
