NUFC and Liverpool linked with shock January swoop for ex-Real Madrid legend – reports

It’s no secret that Rafa Benitez is on the look-out for another goalkeeper at NUFC and a VERY interesting link has emerged in The Mirror this morning, who claim both ourselves and Liverpool are ‘keeping a close eye’ on Iker Casillas’ situation at Porto.

The 36-year old stopper has recently lost his place in the Porto side and Spanish publication El Pais claim both Newcastle and Liverpool are keeping tabs on him, with the Portuguese giants believed to be willing to let him leave in January to free up some room on their wage bill.

He may well be a little past his best, but he was once one of the top goalkeeper’s in world football and his experience and CV in the game is just about as good as it gets; La Liga winner. Spanish Cup winner. Champions League winner.World Cup winner.. Super Cup winner. European Championships winner. World Club Cup winner.

After missing out on Pepe Reina over the summer, Benitez clearly wants another goalkeeper in the mix at NUFC – and this would be one eyebrow raising signing if Rafa did manage to pull it off.

Let us know your thoughts as ever. Is Casillas a signing that would excite you, or would you prefer to steer clear of a keeper whose best days could well be behind him now?
