NUFC fans aren’t happy as ‘undeserved’ alternatives earn England call up ahead of Jamaal Lascelles

England’s squad for next week’s international break have been announced and fellow NUFC fans have made their feelings known about Jamaal Lascelles’ omission from the squad – taking issue with some of those who’ve been selected over the in-form Newcastle captain over anything else.

In fairness, the likes of Phil Jones, John Stones and Gary Cahill’s selection ahead of Lascelles is completely justified, but that is not the point here.

Southgate has called up the likes of Joe Gomez, Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. With that in mind, it’s clear England have decided to give some of our top young performers a chance at senior level – and rightly so given the time to try fresh talent is now after our qualification for next summer’s World Cup has been confirmed.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to see, but surely this means Lascelles – one of the top performing young Englishman in the league this season – should’ve also been rewarded with a call-up if they are?

The 23-year old is the youngest captain the the Premier League and has been a revelation so far in his performance both on and off the pitch.

Forget the two eye-catching match winners he’s headed in, he’s been monstrous at the back and a huge part of our solid start to the season. He’s been the leader of Benitez’s back four and a huge part of a defence that only Manchester City, Manchester Utd and Spurs have conceded less goals than!

No wonder people have taken issue with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez being called up instead. He is a player who has broke onto the scene well at Anfield, but also one who has been part of the 6th worst defence in the top flight this season!

His time will hopefully come, but as the tweet below alludes to, you can’t help but think Jamaal would’ve been called up if he played for one of the top six!
