Former Spurs midfielder Lewis Holtby could be back on NUFC’s radar ahead of the January transfer window, with the Hamburg midfielder having been told he is free to leave the Bundesliga side after falling out with head coach Markus Gisdol, according to Germany outlet BLIDT.
Hotlby was a player who Newcastle were credited with an interest with over the summer, with The Mirror and Miles Starforth from the Shields Gazette confirming he was ‘one of several’ midfielders on our radar:
The 27-year old doesn’t appear to have been one we ended up pursuing over the summer, but given Benitez has confirmed he’s on the look out for competition in the number 10 role, his change of situation in Germany appears to have alerted NUFC, with ESPN also reporting that we will rekindle our interest in the Germany U-21 international in January:

Standing at 5ft 8, Holtby isn’t the biggest, but he makes up for that in his work rate and stamina on the pitch, having become a fan favourite at Hamburg for his energetic and combative style – something Benitez most certainly seems to value in a player.
One to watch ahead of the January window by the looks of things..
