According to La Liga outlet Don Balon, Newcastle United could be set to reignite their interest in former target Kevin Gameiro in January – the 30-year old Atletico Madrid striker who has been told he is surplus to requirements with the Spanish giants.
The Frenchman is a name many of you may have heard mentioned before, and you wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that, with Gameiro being linked with a move to Tyneside at almost every club he’s been at over the past five years.
Newcastle’s apparent interest was first made known during his time at Lorient (where he scored 50 goals in 108 games) and those rumours persisted almost each and every window, with having spells at PSG and Sevilla in the mean time.
He’s now at Atletico Madrid, struggling for game time and said to be available in January, and Don Balon reckon Rafa Benitez could be in the market for him this winter.
It’s another we take with a pinch of salt given his wages, age and those who’d likely to be also competing for his signature, but he clearly is a player whose gained admirers over the club over the past few years. It seems Rafa is partial to an available Atletico Madrid man (Gamez, Manquillo) and we desperately need a proven striker so who knows.
An easy story to make up and a transfer that currently looks unlikely, but a reoccurring rumour to say the least.
