Alan Pardew reveals the West Brom star he made ‘several’ attempts to sign at NUFC

New Baggies boss Alan Pardew has admitted that he made several attempts to sign West Brom centre-half Jonny Evans during his four-year stint at Newcastle.

The 56-year-old was appointed as Tony Pulis’ successor at The Hawthorn’s last week, with his first game as West Brom boss ending in a home 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Pards has been discussing club captain Jonny Evans, admitting that the 29-year-old was a player on his radar whilst manager of Newcastle:

“There was a spell at Newcastle where I looked at Jonny for a while. He will certainly stay as captain.

“A couple of times I tried to sign Jonny Evans and he probably knew that, so that helped him.”

Given he signed for West Brom in the summer of 2015, and Pardew left NUFC in 2014, the Northern Ireland international must’ve been on Alan’s radar at NUFC whilst he was at Man Utd.

A solid defender, a leader and a player who would’ve probably done a steady enough job at St. James’ Park, but in the same breath, he’s hardly a player we’ll be losing sleeping over ‘missing out’ on.

Another Pardew couldn’t quite get’ over the line’ at NUFC though it seems.
