The Chronicle reveal FIVE players who could replace Jonjo Shelvey IF Rafa were to cash in

It’s looking unlikely, with claims of Jonjo Shelvey’s proposed £12m move to West Ham being played down, however the Chronicle have suggested that Benitez WOULD sell the midfielder if the right offer came in for him and a replacement was lined up.

Here we bring you the five names mentioned by the Chronicle, their comments on each potential replacement and a few thoughts from us about the player in question:

Tom Cairney (Fulham)

“He may have just signed a new contract but all is not happy at Fulham with manager Slavisa Jokanovic fuming with the pace and scope of recruitment at Craven Cottage. Cairney’s own form has suffered this season – hitting only one goal so far. He netted 12 last season.”

Our thoughts: A year ago he looked a player well capable of making an impact in the Premier League, but a stuttering season with Fulham so far suggests he is not worth the £20m they were previously demanding for him. I’d steer clear if they’re still wanting silly money.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica)

“Repeatedly linked to Newcastle last year but despite admiration for the 28-year-old, nothing materialised. He wouldn’t be a like-for-like replacement for Shelvey in terms of passing ability but would certainly be a quality replacement. He has only played seven times this season for Benfica.”

Our thoughts: Not someone we know a great deal about. He’s not getting a game at Benfica these days and is more of a defensive midfielder, making me wonder if he would actually be a suitable replacement for the playmaking Shelvey.

Davy Klaassen (Everton)

“He cost the Toffees £24million back in the summer but has already been told to find a new club after Sam Allardyce replaced Ronald Koeman. Klaassen played a key part in Ajax’s title winning side of 2013-14 and was named captain in 2015-16. He’s got clear talent but just hasn’t hit the ground running at Goodison Park. He might be available on loan.”

Our thoughts: Aside from the injuries, this one looks a all too like Siem De Jong. Granted Klaasen is capable of playing in central midfield and not just in the no.10 role, but it’d be a risky one given how he’s failed to settle in England so far. Clearly a talent, mind.

Lewis Holtby (Hamburger SV)

“The 27-year-old is out-of-contract in the summer and could be snapped up for a bargain price this month. He’s a bit more of an attacking midfielder than Shelvey but could fit straight into the current Newcastle United. The Magpies have been linked to the German before.”

Our thoughts: Another slightly more attack minded midfielder, however he did show at Spurs that he had the sort of energy and intensity to his game to cope with the demands of English football. He’s hardly prolific mind and you’d hope we’d get a player of greater quality if we were replacing the talented Shelvey.

Stefano Sturaro (Juventus)

“The Italian has only made four league appearances this year for Juventus as he struggles to break into the the first team. Juventus have hinted that they’re ready to let him leave while his agent has constantly been talking over the past months about Stuararo’s potential exit. At 24, he could represent an excellent investment.”

Our thoughts: Looks like his time is coming to an end with the Italian champions. He’d certainly provide a higher energy alternative to Jonjo, with Sturaro known for his all action and bullish approach in midfield. Could be a clever investment, but would we be able to sign attract him if Shelvey were to go this month? Doubt it.

Let us know your thoughts on Shelvey and his potential sale. Would you allow him to leave if one of the above arrived as his replacement?
