A UEFA report has revealed this week that Newcastle United are the 23rd highest generators of revenue Europe – making a mockery of Mike Ashley’s big interview with Sky claiming he ‘doesn’t have enough’ money to back Benitez.
It’s hardly a surprise that he’s been caught out lying (again) – he does it all the time – but this big interview he gave to Sky Sports back in August really does show him up when you see UEFA’s figures.

As you can see in the interview above, he states that Rafa could have ‘every penny the club generates’ when asked how much money he’d give Rafa Benitez over the summer. Based on what Rafa received and what NUFC (Ashley) took in, this was not the case.
Here’s the figures released from UEFA this week, highlighting that Ashley’s NUFC generates more revenue than the likes of Everton, Southampton – yet where was proof of that for Benitez over the summer or in this crucial January transfer window?

Where’s the money that was set aside for Rafa to bring in a left-back and striker on deadline day? Where’s the cash from the Premier League TV deals? Where’s the windfall for winning the Championship? Where is the £6m or so picked up from Hanley and De Jong sales at the end of the summer? You guessed it, in Ashley’s bag pocket!
Interestingly, Ashley has suggested Staveley was a time-waster on Tuesday, but the prospective NUFC buyer has categorically denied those claims in an interview with the Times today..
Someone’s lying. I’d like to bet it’s Ashley.
What’s “FY16” at the top of the fourth column? Could it be Football Year 16, ie. the 2015-2016 season? These are not NEW results. The accounts up to about June 2016 have been available for a long time. Problem is they cover when we were in the Premiership. By the time they were published we were relegated.
The results for 2016-17 season are not going to show that level of income. The club lost up to £100m Sky TV money. The so-called “windfall” from winning the Championship was less than £10m. We probably made a loss, despite the offloading of many players. We had two big sales on paper generating around £50m (Sissoko and Wijnaldum) but Spurs and Liverpool didn’t pay up front, but instalments over 4 years. There were still players on Prem wages playing in the Champ. Ashley may have had to loan the club money, as he did in 2010, to pay those wages.
Every single club in the Premiership last year, including the Mackems, must have generated much more income from TV, commercial etc sources, than did Newcastle.
