Big claims that NUFC are ‘hopeful’ of sealing stunning club record deal for La Liga striker

According to the Daily Express late last night, Newcastle are now hopeful of completing a stunning deal to sign Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro.

After the Chronicle confirmed yesterday that the club were in talks with a striker whose potential arrival would break our transfer record, this makes us wonder if the French international striker is in fact the man we are in talks to sign?

The source here (Daily Express) isn’t the most reliable, however Gameiro is a player that’s been linked with NUFC several times in the past, a player Benitez will know well from his extensive knowledge of the Spanish league and someone who could solve our goalscoring problems in front of goal.

He’s scored goals everywhere he’s been. With 90 goals in just under 200 appearances in Spain (Sevilla and Atletico Madrid) and 80 goals and almost 30 assists in the same number of appearances in France (PSG and Lorient), he clearly knows where the back of the net is!

Following the arrival of Diego Costa, the Frenchman has slipped down the pecking order at Aletico Madrid and seems to be looking elsewhere in a bid for first-team football.

One point worth mentioning – would Mike Ashley pay over £16m for a player turning 31 in May? If he fired us to safety I’m sure he would, but it’s hardly Ashley’s style!

We shall see – for now, here’s Gameiro in action:
