BREAKING: Newcastle defender signs new long-term contract with the club – good news

Some positive news in the last few moments, with the club confirming that Paul Dummett has signed a new contract with Newcastle United, keeping the left-back on Tyneside until 2022.

Say what you will about Paul Dummett, his development since Rafa Benitez’s arrival has been brilliant, turning him into one of the most reliable defenders at the club.

Since his return from injury on the opening day against Spurs, we have won 3 and drawn 4 of our last 9, with the only two defeats coming against league leaders Manchester City both home and away – with us conceding just 8 goals in nine games since he returned to the side.

He may be limited offensively and won’t give you marauding runs down the left or several assists a season, but he’s a player who sticks to his task and does his job defensively 9 times out of 10.

Here’s what he’s had to say about it:

“It’s my boyhood club and I’ve been a supporter for many years so to extend my stay at the club for even longer is really important to me.

“I’ve always wanted to stay here and the manager and the club have wanted to keep me so I’m really pleased to have signed the new contract and hopefully there are many more years to come.”

From being told by Pardew that he wasn’t good enough to becoming one of Rafa’s most trusted players. A great story and fully deserved!

Well done Paul!
